Apple has already worked with OpenAI for ChatGPT and soon it might work with Google’s Gemini for the big Siri AI push this year. Apple released the iOS 18.2 version that was the gateway for the new Apple Intelligence (AI) features. Additionally, the launch enabled users to reroute Siri searches to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, marking the first time the company provided a system-wide integration of a third-party service.

A leak suggests that the company may deepen the integration by adding Google’s AI models to the service. In a post on X, MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris hinted at the potential for a collaboration. He pointed out that Apple may incorporate Gemini AI models into the operating system by sharing a screenshot of code from the newly released iOS 18.4 beta.

According to the screenshot, the “Third-party model" section of the update’s backend now displays two options. Google is now included as an option, even though OpenAI was previously added. Notably, no further information is disclosed by the code, including which AI models can be merged or what features the model will have access to.

If verified, this leak will also support information that Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi alluded to in a post-keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024.

The company executive at the time made it clear that Apple would keep incorporating several AI models in addition to OpenAI’s chatbot. “Nothing to announce right now, but that’s our direction," Federighi said, mentioning Google Gemini by name as well.

Even with the breach, it seems unlikely that Gemini AI models will be integrated anytime soon. The debut of Gemini capabilities in Apple devices may be closer to the iPhone 17 series launch, even if the code was present in the iOS 18.4 beta update. The digital behemoth might grant OpenAI a period of exclusivity before enrolling additional AI partners, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who made a similar assertion last year.

Now, in addition to Siri, ChatGPT may be accessed through the Apple AI Writing Tools. You can use the chatbot to create images with the Compose feature and other features.
