ChatGPT, the popular AI-powered chatbot, has experienced a global outage, leaving millions of users unable to access its service. The outage began shortly before 7 PM ET (5:30 am Indian time) and has not only affected ChatGPT, but also OpenAI’s API and Sora services. However, the services were back online around 8 am Indian time.
The ChatGPT outage came after Meta platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook experienced outages for thousands of users across the globe on Wednesday, causing inconvenience to millions of social media users.
As soon as users tried to log in, they were shown the message “ChatGPT is currently unavailable". However, the website says the issue has been identified and the OpenAI team is “working to roll out a fix".
Taking to X, OpenAI shared an update: “We’re experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry and we’ll keep you updated!"
Downdetector, a site that monitors online outages, has registered a massive spike in complaints from users regarding the services of ChatGPT.
Hundreds of businesses, free users, and paying users use ChatGPT’s services. Many users have experienced features suffering from slow logins and degraded performance. OpenAI has not given any time on how much time it will take to resolve the issue, but has promised to keep users updated.
As the popular chatbot went down, people flocked to social media platform X to express their inconveniences and also shared hilarious memes to address the situation. “ChatGPT is down. Now I have to Google like a cave man," one user said. Another wrote, “ChatGPT is down. A lot of students won’t be able to do their essays now."
“When you’re working on a tight deadline, and #ChatGPT is down … What’s going on @OpenAI huh?" wrote another netizen, showcasing just how dependent people were on ChatGPT for their projects and studies. “ChatGPT went down when I finally started studying for my exam," said another individual.
The ChatGPT outage, which succeeded the Meta outage hours earlier, followed another large Meta blackout in March that took down Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Meta also saw a major outage affecting Instagram and Facebook in October 2022.
